Budget padding: Absence of Judge stalls Jibrin’s case

The absence of the judge presiding over Abdulmuni Jibril Kofa’s case against the National Assembly and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, on Tuesday stalled the sitting of the Federal High Court, Kano. The Kiru/Bebeji federal constituency sued the National Assembly and Speaker Yakubu Dogara, challenging the legality of suspending their member, Abdulmumini Jibrin Kofar, from the National Assembly. Speaking to newsmen at the court, the lead counsel for Kofa’s constituency, Mr. Bashir Muqaddam, said the Judge, Justice Idris Koko, had travelled out of the state for the Judges Conference, currently holding at the Federal Capital, Abuja. He said after returning from the conference, the Judges would proceed for the Christmas and New Year vacations. Tight security as Abia council polls hold today

The Commissioner of Police in Abia State, Mr. Adeleye Oyebade, has said the State Police command will provide adequate security across the seventeen local government areas of the State to ensure a smooth conduct of the local government election today. He stated that the Nigerian constitution guarantees that there must be adequate security during elections at the local councils because the people at the grassroots were involved. Oyebade who spoke during a press conference with senior Police officers in Umuahia, the State Capital, pointed out that the command had mapped out its operational plans to secure the State during and after the election. He explained that leaders of various political parties in the State have been briefed regarding the conduct of their candidates and the electorate on the election day. U.S. provides additional N71.5bn to fight poverty in Nigeria

The United States Agency for International Development has announced $227.3m (about N71.5 billion) additional developmental assistance to support the five-year $2.3bn agreement signed with the Federal Government in 2015. The U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Stuart Symington, made the announcement in a statement issued to newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja. He said that the $227.3m had brought the total provision under the agreement to $702m. According to him, the additional funding is intended to help Nigeria reduce extreme poverty by stimulating inclusive economic growth, promote healthier, more-educated population, and strengthen good governance. Police arrest wanted criminal in Imo

Following the recent declaration of “Operation Nkpochapu Phase two” by the Imo state police command, over 25 criminals terrorising the citizens of the state have been arrested. The Police Commissioner, Mr. Taiwo Lakanu, made the disclosure in a press statement issued by Mr Andrew Anwerem, the command Public Relations Officer. Lakanu said that some of the suspects had been charged to court, while others were still undergoing investigation. Lakanu said that the Nkpochapu declaration would guarantee maximum security in Imo especially this festive period. He said that a criminal, Obinna Onuoha, who was declared wanted by the police, was arrested by the command on Dec. 4. He added that the suspect had confessed to have murdered four persons at various occasions in recent time. A Magistrate Court sitting in Osogbo has issued a bench warrant against the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Adewale Akanbi following his refusal to appear in court in a case instituted by the Oluwo of Iwo Oke, Oba Kadiri Adeoye. Although Oba Akanbi was represented in court on Tuesday by his counsel, Mr. Olaide Yekeen, Magistrate Olusola Aluko issued the bench warrant despite the application for stay of proceeding; notice of preliminary objection and a notice of appeal filed before the court. Oba Akanbi was dragged to court by the Oluwo of Iwo Oke, who leveled some criminal allegations against the paramount ruler in Iwo land.
